In 1993 Chaz Dean created his WEN line of hair care products. Dean noted the harmful effects of shampoos on both hair, and the environment, and decided to do something about it by creating hair cleaning products that clean with astringent and antibacterial properties without lather. Dean chose the name WEN, because it is a backward spelling of the word, new, and rhymes with the word, zen. The problem with normal shampoos is they contain chemicals such as sodium lauryl and laureth sulfates that damage hair. These chemicals cause fading, stripping, frizzy dry hair. With continued use people often will experience some hair loss in addition to the damage caused to their hair by continued use of shampoos. The WEN products stimulate the scalp and produce blood circulation as well as helping to prevent hair loss. With these hair care products, coloring lasts longer, the hair is strengthened and has a real sheen to it. WEN also works fantastic on ethnic hair due to the amount of moisture content the products contain. These products are even used on Chaz’s own labrador retriever dogs, however, if you plan on using WEN products on your animals, check with your veterinarian first, because some dogs may be sensitive to some of the ingredients. It is worth nothing that if you plan on using any of these products on your cat, that is fine, but stay away from the Tea Tree, because it contains an oil that is toxic to cats.
The studio that Dean has is a reflection upon the man himself. No signs trumpet the existence of this 1920s Hollywood Craftsman hidden behind layers of ivy. To enter the studio is to enter a realm of calm and inner peace. What has made Chaz Dean so famous is not just the quality of his hair care products, but the fact that he makes a connection with each of his clients. People who visit the salon speak of coming out of it not only with fantastic hair, but with a feeling of being centered, as well. The patio is adorned with lanterns, babbling fountains and lush plant life. Inside there is the warmth of hardwood floors, aromatherapy candles, live orchids and beautiful art. Visiting the salon can be as transformative for your soul as it is for your hair. Indeed, Dean strives to give spiritual nourishment along with the physical beauty attained with the care of the hair and scalp.
Born in Vermont and adopted at birth, Chaz lived in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Arizona before moving to Los Angeles in 1985. Already a photographer of some renown, he enrolled in a cosmetology school to enhance his creative abilities. He became a star at one of the leading salons before going out on his own and really rocketing into stardom. He arguably is the top stylist for celebrities, as well as the creator of perhaps the best selling hair care products of all time. Chaz Dean enjoys hiking with his dogs and practicing yoga.
